The Employment Outlook for 2025: From Job Recovery to Sustained Resilience?

Lecture Introduction
In this lecture, Dr. Ekkehard Ernst, Chief of the Macroeconomic Policy and Jobs Unit at the International Labour Organization (ILO), will present the newly released World Employment and Social Outlook Report 2025 on behalf of the ILO. The report provides an in-depth analysis of global labor market trends, with a particular focus on slowing economic recovery, persistent youth unemployment, and gender pay gaps, examining their impact on the promotion of decent work. It further explores structural challenges such as global labor market disparities and offers insights into shaping a more sustainable future of work worldwide.

The World Employment and Social Outlook series, launched in 2015 by the ILO Research Department, is the organization’s report on global employment issues. Published twice a year, the January edition forecasts global employment and social trends for the coming years, while the May edition analyzes and summarizes policy practices across countries aimed at achieving high employment rates and promoting income equality, based on the latest data and evidence.
